Shopping for formalwear can be exciting, especially if you have a special event coming up on your calendar. If you’re planning on adding a new dress to your formalwear wardrobe for a particular event, here are a few things to keep in mind as you shop.
Understand the Dress Code
Before you do anything else, you need to understand the dress code of the event you’re attending. Here are some of the most common formal dress codes:
- Formal white tie—Out of all the dress codes, this is the most formal one of all. If you were invited to a formal white tie event, you should probably plan on wearing a floor-length ball gown.
- Formal black tie—Although still considered formal, black tie events are less formal than white tie events. At these events, you can still wear a floor-length gown, but you can also wear formal gowns in alternative lengths. However, if the invitation is “black tie optional” you can dress a little bit less formal.
- Semiformal—At semiformal events, you don’t have to wear a formal dress. In fact, you could even wear a nice suit, a skirt paired with a blouse, or a cocktail outfit.
Now that you understand the different types of dress codes that exist, you’re ready to go out there and find that perfect dress!
