If you’re like most men, you probably have several suits hanging in your closet waiting to be worn to formal events. The next time you pick out one of your suits to wear to an event, but you’re not entirely sure what tie to wear, there are several principles you should keep in mind to create a great look.
- Proportion- The proportion of your tie should go well with your overall build and the style of your suit. For example, if you are a larger man, your suit is going to look best with an average-width tie that extends down to your belt buckle. Comparatively, a leaner man should go with ties that are skinnier in width and shorter in length.
- Color- There are two factors that play into what color tie you should wear with your suit: your complexion and the message you’re trying to give off with your look. For instance, if you want to go for a bolder look, you should consider going with a tie in a dark red, purple, or blue, as long as it goes with the color of your complexion.
- Pattern- Mixing patterned ties with your suits can be a fun way to add interest to your look. However, you have to know how to do it right. The key to wearing a patterned tie is to make sure that its color goes with the color of your suit and your dress shirt. Additionally, you should make sure the pattern of the tie is not already present somewhere else in your outfit. For instance, if you are wearing a pinstripe suit, you may not want to go with a tie that has a similar pattern.
